22 Resources for Summer Learning

School is wrapping up and most of us are thinking of ways to help our students maintain their progress over the summer in fun and engaging ways. The following resources are terrific for learning from home with or without parent and caregiver help. For the most part, the websites collated here offer free activities and content. So, take a few minutes, click through some of these resources and share them with your families for engaging summer enrichment.

Math

  1. Quantile Summer Math Challenge is a six-week program that helps children practice math skills learned during the school year. The 2021 Summer Math Challenge begins June 21st.
  2. Funbrain Math Zone is a collection of interactive math games for grades K-8, balancing learning with play.
  3. Illuminations, from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), includes complete lesson plans, mobile games, and brain teasers.
  4. NUMBEROCK is a collection of music videos that teach and reinforce math concepts for primary to elementary levels.

Language Arts

  1. Scholastic Summer Reading resource that features live author events. Authors to look forward to this summer include Pam Muñoz Ryan, Kwame Mbalia & Prince Joel Makonnen, Gordon Korman, and Ann M. Martin.
  2. ReadWriteThink reading and language arts resources include activities and projects, games and tools, and printable activity sheets.
  3. Teach Your Monster to Read is a fun, interactive game for early readers that helps them move from identifying letters and sounds to reading sentences.

English Language Learners

  1. LearnEnglishKids, a British Council site, helps young English learners practice listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills via games, videos, and printable content.
  2. Duolingo language platform helps English learners practice reading and speaking skills, with personalized feedback.

Social-Emotional

  1. Emotional ABCs are focused on helping children understand the what and why’s of their emotions, with the goal of how to make better choices. Activities are visually captivating and interactive.
  2. MindUP provides children with the knowledge and tools to manage stress, regulate emotions, and face challenges with resilience and optimism. There are activities for families to try at home together.

STEAM

  1. National Geographic Explorer Classroom connects learners with National Geographic Explorers to hear behind-the-scenes stories and interact with scientists, researchers, and storytellers from around the world.
  2. Get Body Smart includes animated text narrations and quizzes explaining human body systems which are great for every age of learner, including adult learners.
  3. Climate Kids by NASA is a collection of activities and videos focusing on Earth Science concepts.
  4. Physics Central has a collection of physics-based comic books (yes, COMIC BOOKS!) that are great for those who love this genre of writing.
  5. Scratch is the world’s largest free coding community for youth who are taught how to create animations, games, and stories.
  6. Classics for Kids encourages young ones to learn more about classical music and the composers behind them.

Physical Activity

  1. NBA at Home is an interactive series providing basketball skills and drills featuring NBA and WNBA players. Activities encourage young ones to engage in physical activity that promotes skill development as well as character development.
  2. Summer Slugger, a partnership between EverFi and Major League Baseball, has designed engaging learning experiences for students to help them stay on track with learning and better prepare for the next school year with digital courses in a variety of topics such as place value, geometry, phonemic awareness, and comprehension.

All Subjects/All Ages

  1. Learning Heroes – Summer Recharge includes a Readiness Check for families to gain a better idea of what their children need to help them maintain their learning progress in Math and Reading.
  2. GreatSchools has grade-based toolkits to help families find the resources and materials they need for their learners at home.
  3. Time for Kids has real-world articles for grades K-6, covering a variety of topics such as community, arts, science, and technology.
