Get the Funding You Need for the Technology You Want

The U.S. Department of Education offers a variety of funds that can help you get the technology you need and want for your schools, but the rules concerning these funds can seem complicated and confusing. To help clear away some of the confusion, we’ll be summarizing the requirements of five different funds over the next few weeks, beginning with the Title IV, Part B fund for 21st Century Community Learning Centers.  21st Century Community Learning Centers

Most community learning centers were established to provide academic enrichment activities during non-school hours, particularly to students in high-poverty areas and low-performing schools. Title IV, Part B funding supports the establishment or expansion of activities at these centers, including digital literary tools. Programs must help students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects.

Key Requirements

The key requirements for this funding are as follows:

• Academic Achievement. Offer a broad array of before- and after-school activities (including during summer recess periods) that advance student academic achievement.
• Disadvantaged Students. Serve students who primarily attend schools eligible for school-wide programs under section 1114; or schools that serve a high percentage of students from low-income families.
• Staff Training. Provide easy-to-use options for educators who may not be as highly trained as the classroom teacher. Provide capacity building, training, and technical assistance.
• Efficacy. Programs must be based upon scientifically based research that provides evidence that the program or activity will help students meet the state and local student academic achievement standards.
