February 16 will mark the second annual Boxlight STEM Day (#BLSTEM)—and there are a few new details, so read on to learn more!
First of all, some things won’t change. Just like last year, students will work with their classmates in a hands-on, inquiry-based learning event designed to help them learn critical STEM skills and understand how STEM disciplines apply to the world around them. And as before, Boxlight will provide the lab experiment and the event will involve using our wireless Labdisc portable STEM lab, so it’s less “same old classroom activity” and more “exciting new real-world work.”
However, instead of selecting specific schools this time, we’re opening up the event to every school that has the Labdisc. So no matter where you are, as long as you have a Labdisc, your class can join in the learning fun!
Students will use the Labdisc data logger to perform simultaneous experiments and share their respective resulting data in an activity called “What is Distance?” In this activity, students will examine the relationship between speed, time, and distance, as well as exploring graphs of distance versus time. Think about how incredible it will be to conduct this experiment along with other science classes across the US and Latin America!
Right now, there are about 26 million STEM jobs in the United States, and the number of STEM occupations is expected to grow at a faster rate than the average of all occupations. That means the majority of new jobs will be STEM jobs—so we need to prepare students for this future workplace. We're doing our part with resources such as the STEM guide we published last year and events like STEM Day (#BLSTEM).
We created this event to raise awareness among local schools and industries about inquiry-based learning and the benefits of STEM education. It’s one of the ways in which we can help students to develop the critical skills that will prepare them for life beyond the classroom, enabling them to be tomorrow’s engineers and innovators. Plus, the Labdisc gives them a taste of the types of tools that they’ll use in a STEM work setting.
