Retro Reimagined: Your Whiteboard and 4 Other Trends Finding New Life

Written by Holly Fritz-Palao | Tue, May 8, 2018

The 2010s is an era of comebacks. In everything from fashion to music, retro ideas are being renewed to fit the demands of a modern audience. Young people especially are taking to retro-inspired products, focusing more on the lifestyle enrichment value that these vintage items can offer.

This month, we announced the MimioFrame, a retrofit product that uses a teacher’s existing classroom whiteboard, projector, and computer to quickly and easily turn any whiteboard into a 10-touch interactive whiteboard. This offering has reimagined the idea behind bringing interactive technology into the classroom, making it possible for teachers to bring their old classroom back to life by upgrading their technology in less than 15 minutes.

Here are four other ways that retro products and ideas have been reimagined and brought back to life in the past decade:

  1. Vinyl records: These have seen a monumental increase in sales over the past 12 years. According to Nielsen Music, a music data tracking company, vinyl album sales hit a record high in 2017, marking the 12th year of sales growth for the medium. Millennials make up the largest portion of vinyl buyers, with nearly half of record consumers under the age of 25. Vinyl continues to hold its own in the music market thanks to the collection potential it offers, allowing consumers to display and share their music with others.
  1. Instant photography: At the turn of the millennium, it appeared as though instant photography was a lost art, and Polaroid filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Instant photography returned to the mainstream market in the late 2000s with the rise in popularity of Fujifilm’s Instax line, a modern series of instant cameras and accessories. Thanks to both its affordability and accessibility, the Instax series helped to renew an appreciation for instant photography. At the end of 2017, the rights to Polaroid’s name and products were purchased, and the original Polaroid film begun to be manufactured once again.
  1. Superheroes: Superheroes have always resonated with audiences of all ages. However, in the digital world, superheroes that were once only found in comic books have gained new popularity through digital media. The most recent Marvel movie, Avengers: Infinity War, has already reached $800 million in the box office worldwide, putting it well on its way to $1 billion. With the modern special effects technology available, superhero movies have gained a whole new level of visual excitement that continues to put the genre at the top of the box office.
  1. Fashion trends: Fashion has been known to recycle trends throughout the decades. Currently, trends from the 90s have become popular once again in the style industry. High-waisted, relaxed-fit jeans have returned, with most designers opting for more clean and classic denim compared to the ripped and destroyed looks from the 90s. Another big trend that has made a comeback are platform sandals, dressing up outfits and adding a little height while still being comfortable and versatile.

Although we often like to think back to the good old days, the present has a lot of reimagined versions of our favorites from the past to offer. From media to technology, the 2010s are fueling comebacks of all kinds.
