In the latest episode of Unbox Innovation, host Michelle Dawn Mooney is joined by Evan Brus, Training and Development Specialist for EOS Education by Boxlight, to explore how educators can gear up for a tech-enhanced school year. With Evan’s rich experience in both university teaching and educational technology, this episode is packed with actionable tips and insights to help you maximize new tools and navigate tech challenges. Read a few highlights from the episode.

The Importance of Being Tech Ready

Each new school year highlights the crucial need to be tech-ready. While technology can be fun and exciting, it’s not always foolproof. A well-prepared tech environment enhances efficiency, boosts comfort and builds confidence for both teachers and students. By addressing tech challenges proactively, teachers can ensure a smoother and more engaging classroom experience.

Evan Brus emphasizes the significance of this preparation. He shares, “I work with teachers day in, day out on solving whatever problems they’re having because ... No matter how fun and exciting technology is, it always comes with some trade-offs, and there are always a few little kinks to work out.”

Practical Steps for Teachers

Evan shares practical steps that teachers can take to ensure they are prepared for the integration of technology in their classrooms:

  • Check Devices: Ensure all devices are working properly, including student one-to-one devices, digital signage, interactive flat panel displays, and audio equipment.
  • Update Software: Address software updates to avoid disruptions during class. “Some things need updates...every so often you’ll run into an app that forces you to update before you can use it. And if you’re trying to do that for the first time in front of your (class)...they’re bored for a minute while this loads up. It’s never a good experience,” Evan explains.
  • Explore New Tools: Once the basics are covered, it’s time to explore new tools and programs that might be available for the upcoming school year. This is where the fun begins. Evan encourages teachers to try out new things and see what might be beneficial for their classrooms saying, “After you get the basics done, time to explore a little bit and see what might make sense in your classroom for the upcoming year.”
  • Keep Systems Updated: It’s also important to keep rosters and learning management systems (LMS) updated. Ensuring that all students are correctly listed in the LMS is crucial for smooth communication and assignment management.

Final Thoughts

Being tech ready for the new school year is essential for both teachers and students. It ensures a smoother, more efficient classroom experience and helps build confidence in using technology. As Evan Brus aptly puts it, “Don’t stress yourself out unnecessarily. My hope is that some of this makes your life a little bit easier.”
