Web developers are responsible for designing and creating websites. In addition to ensuring the functionality of the site, they are also in charge of meeting their clients’ aesthetic requests, capacity needs, and technical demands.

Their job requires good interpersonal skills, as they must be able to understand and implement the wishes of their clients. This includes meeting with clients to determine what the clients want their web sites to accomplish and what features would they like to provide. Once these questions are answered, the web designer begins designing the site based on his or her assessment of the client’s needs.

Being a great communicator is important not only when working with the client, but also within the team. Websites are complex and interconnected and so individual developers must keep constant communication with their team to produce satisfying results for their clients and not interfere with the work the rest of their team is implementing. Across the board, it’s important to have a clear vision and plan for the site both graphically and technically.

Depending on the size of the project, there may be specific individuals who focus on the technical construction of the site (back-end developers), while others focus on creating the right look and feel for the finished site (front-end developers).

Web developers have many responsibilities including developing new web applications, updating website aesthetics, designing helpful applications, maintaining and updating website functionality, and monitoring website traffic to ensure the site stays relevant, working, and capable of handling the demands placed on it. To keep up with the demands of a technically-changing world, web developers must stay up-to-date on coding languages and techniques and must be fluent in common programming languages such as HTML or XML.

Given the prominence of mobile technology, web developers are also responsible for creating effective and aesthetically-pleasing websites that work across a variety of platforms.

Web developers often have good job flexibility, as there are positions available for them within small, medium, and large organizations. Moreover, many web developers are successful consultants, contractors, and freelancers.
